mla style writing guide

When writing a dissertation or thesis, your instructor will probably require you to follow one of two formats of popular style for your paper, APA Style, or MLA style. Although both formats are similar, have subtle differences that you need to know.

Generally, you select the style to follow based on the subject of the paper you are writing. Each style is the document format a little differently to meet the needs of the appointment to the subject.

I. YOUR CHOICE OF STYLE

In his most part, your instructor will select the formatting style to use for the paper. If you have a choice, however, here are some suggestions for deciding which items of use.

APA STYLE.

Using APA Style to issues related to social sciences, such as business, criminal justice, economics, law, and careers medicine, including nursing and psychology. The American Psychological Association created the APA style, and you can visit apastyle (dot) org on the Internet for More information about APA style. The Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association is the complete list of guidelines for APA style and APA formatting rules.

MLA STYLE.

Use MLA style for topics related to the humanities and liberal arts, such as literature, communication mass media and studies. The Modern Language Association oversees the development of MLA style, and you can visit MLA (dot) org on the Internet for more information. For undergraduate students, using the MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers (sometimes abbreviated to MLA Handbook) as the guide for The following MLA style. For graduate students and professionals, use the MLA Style Manual and Guide to Scholarly Publishing (sometimes abbreviated to MLA Style Manual) to find official rules and guidelines for MLA style.

II. DIFFERENCES

If you still are not sure which style to use in their work, here are some formatting differences between APA style and MLA style. Choose the style that will allow you to format your paper and deliver information to its readers more efficiently.

ABSTRACT.

The difference in this category is fairly obvious: APA style requires a summary page, while the style MLA no. The summary is a brief summary of their work.

In citations in the text.

With the two styles, the use of name of the author (s) in any text citation. In APA style, which also include the year of publication. In MLA style, include the page number of the information above, along with the name of Author (s), but not the year of publication. By including the year of publication, APA style offers readers the opportunity to decide the amount of relevance to place in a particular font, depending on their age. With the material used in MLA style, however, the age of the source material is usually not as vital to its relevance, MLA style so not list the year of publication.

With both styles, remember that the quotation in the text is simply a method of ensuring that your readers can easily find the full citation in the reference list or works cited page at the end of the document. You do not need extensive information about the source of a citation in the text.

Page Numbers.

With the two styles, the page number appears in the upper right corner of each page, but each style has different additional information. In APA style, should include a title running to the left of the page number on each page. A degree of implementation is two or three word summary of the title of your paper. In MLA style, include the author's name to the left of the page number on each page.

REFERENCE LIST FORMAT.

With so much in APA style and MLA style, enumerating each of its sources in the page reference list (Style APA) or works cited page (MLA style), use the author's full name (s) in each entry. In the style of the APA, also list only initials and middle name of each author. In MLA style, specifies the first and second name of each author. (Reporting by name is optional.)

TITLE PAGE.

APA style requires a title page, but not MLA style. If you choose Go to title page in MLA style, simply include your name, your instructor, course, and complete date in the upper right corner of the front page. Then, the title is centered on the page, followed by your text.

You will also find several subtle differences between APA style and MLA style in capitalization and punctuation rules. However, the differences are too numerous to list here, and probably will not affect your decision on what style to use with your paper.
