Creative Writing Exercises Poetry
Poetry submission for a writing contest at university?

The university I attend has a yearly writing contest in various categories (poetry, short fiction, research, term papers, etc.) and I would like to enter this year. I am not much of a writer but I have started journaling every day to get creative ideas. I am thinking of submitting into either, or both, the poetry and short fiction categories (an entrant can submit into more than one category). I think it would be a good exercise, I am not expecting to win on a first try.

But I do have a question. For the poetry submission, an entrant is allowed to submit up to three original poems. I would like to submit three. However, would it be a good idea to submit a variety, i.e. each in a different form, different rhyme scheme, different themes? Or would it be better to submit three poems that follow a connected theme, i.e. a free verse, a sonnet, and a rhyming poem, each one on a different season?

I’d appreciate your insights, thank you.

I’d go with the different forms/same theme
